No 1 Squadron highlights

No. 1 Squadron conducted operations against Japanese forces in the Netherlands East Indies from Darwin, beginning in March 1944. Their duties included fighter escorts, off-shore patrols, surveillance and supply.

May '44 - "Sighted enemy A/c "Sally" 150 miles from Darwin - no engagement

May '44 - Lost 2 Beauforts (A9-509 and A9-541) to anti-aircraft fire at Penfui, Timor

June '44 - Strafed 40' enemy launch of Leti, reported enemy activity at Leti, emergency landing at Batchelor airfield, NT

19th June '44 - Crash-landed on takeoff from the Allied airstrip on Millingimbi Island.

20th June '44 - Transferred to Darwin by Air Ambulance.

6th July '44 - Transferred to Sydney for 6 weeks sick leave.

17th Aug. '44 - Resumed duties with No1 Sqd


No 38 Transport Squadron highlights

October '44 - Transferred to No 38 Transport Squadron (C47's), based at Richmond Sydney, then serving the Paratroop Training Unit.

January '45 - No 38 Squadron moves to Archerfield, Queensland, carries out sorties in and around North West Papua at Hollandia (now Jayapura) and Biak (near the northern coast of Papua)

September '45 - Transferring POW's from the Japanese concentration camp at Changi, Singapore.

May 1946 - Ferries supplies of pig bristles from Chongqing to Australia for the post war construction industry. "Nearly collided with a CNAC Commando (Chinese National Aviation Corporation)"

May - Dec '47 - Flights to and from Japan to assist with the post war reconstruction of Japan.
